Why Houston Fences Fail

If you install a fence incorrectly in Houston, Webster, Pearland, Sugar Land, or League City, then failure is all but guaranteed. The local soil and weather conditions all but guarantee it.

It takes an expert to ensure that a fence survives both conditions for the long haul.

Work with a less experienced fence contractor—or attempt DIY—and you could see leaning posts and rotting wood in just a few short years.

What kind of soil do you find in Houston, TX, and how does it impact fence installation?

Here in Houston we have “black gumbo” clay soil. And that soil is constantly shifting.

During the wet season, the clay absorbs water and swells, pushing posts upward or sideways.

During the dry season, the clay shrinks and cracks, leaving gaps around concrete footing.

The constant expansion and contraction causes fence posts to lean, wobble, or even snap over time.

Our solution? LoneStar Fence accounts for black gumbo soil by using deep post settings and proper concrete mixes to anchor fence posts below the active moisture zone, ensuring stability despite the shifting ground.

How does Houston weather impact fences?

Houston is humid in every season. Choose the wrong wood, and you’re facing rot and fungi.

That’s why LoneStar Fence & Construction uses pressure treated pine or naturally-resistant Western Red Cedar, both of which naturally resist moisture and rot.

Then you have sun exposure. The Texas sun acts like a laser, bleaching wood and making cheap vinyl brittle. Wood requires you to apply a good oil-based stain early. Going with vinyl? We use high-grade, UV stabilized vinyl to ensure that your fence can beat the heat.

Finally there’s wind load. While many fence types shrug off hurricane force winds, wood and vinyl need special TLC. Proper post depth makes all the difference. Of course, for many Houston customers, shifting to brick or wrought iron is both an elegant and durable solution that offers high security, elegance, and security.

While these options may cost a little more on the front end, they offer more peace of mind and require less maintenance than wood or vinyl options.
