How to Choose the Right Fence Color

Posted on March 10, 2025 by Lone Star Fence & Construction

Most people choose to add a fence to their property because they want to add curb appeal to their home as well as privacy and security. And while the style of the fence is important, the color matters too.

Color won’t matter as much if you have a wrought iron fence…those are black. But what about wooden or masonry fences? How do you make sure you’re choosing a color that will showcase your fence to its best advantage?

Check Your Neighborhood Guidelines

Plenty of Houston homeowners live in HOAs. If you’re one of them, you don’t have the power to unilaterally decide your fence color—at least, not without some unpleasant consequences.

Always check your bylaws before choosing a fence color. When in doubt, ask the HOA board what might be acceptable. You’ll lose some choices, but you’ll avoid some expensive headaches.

Consider Matching Your House Trim or Siding Color

You may already have the perfect fence color in the form of your house trim or siding color, especially if you’ve painted recently.

Matching your fence to either of these colors will give your entire property a pulled-together look.

Haven’t handled your exterior paint in awhile, and have no plans to do so? Can’t find the right shade of oil-based stain to do what you need to do? Try this neutral color wheel tool to help you choose a shade that’s close enough, or at least complimentary.

Consider Matching Outdoor Furniture

For many of our customers, the fence is a way to transform the backyard landscape into a private oasis. So it makes sense to pull the fence together with the colors in your outdoor furniture.

Doing so will give the appearance that the entire yard is a discrete and welcoming space. Of course, if you don’t have outdoor furniture yet, you can always do it the other way around, choosing a fence color you like and choosing furniture to match.

Pay Attention to Home Styles

Some fence colors just don’t do well with some home styles. An avant-guard lime green and navy blue modern home won’t look good with a staid dark brown fence. A Tudor Revival wants natural colors, not bright ones.

Look at pictures of old home styles and their fences for inspiration. The same goes for fence type: you wouldn’t put a chain link fence around a Victorian or Greek Revival home, but you might use wrought iron or a masonry fence.

Watch the Sun

If your fence gets a lot of sun exposure you’ll need to plan for shades to fade, at least a little bit. This means you might want to initially go a few shades darker than your trim, siding, or outdoor furniture.

While it’s hard to tell with precision where the sun will leave your fence color, adjusting a few shades darker will at least get you close.
