The Benefits of Redwood Fencing

Redwood makes an outstanding building material for Houston-area fences. If you’re looking for a wooden fence material that will be gorgeous and long-lasting, then you can’t go wrong with redwood.

Here are some reasons why redwood is one of our number one choices for building wooden fences in Houston.

What does redwood look like?

Redwood is a sturdy wood that ranges in color from light pink to an attractive red-brown color.

You can also stain your redwood fencing to change the color if you like.

If you don’t stain your fence, it will eventually weather to a silvery-gray color which many Houston residents love.

How long does a redwood fence last?

A redwood fence can up to 25 years, which puts it head and shoulders above many other types of wood meant to build wooden fences, which typically only last 7 to 15 years.

Do redwood fences repel bugs and rot?

Yes! Redwood is full of natural oils and tannins which act like insect repellents. It’s also mold and rot resistant.

We still recommend treating your wooden fence with an oil-based stain to protect it even more. Resistance is not the same thing as immunity. Nevertheless, redwood is a material which is well-suited to creating long-lasting and useful fences.

How much maintenance does a redwood fence need?

We recommend cleaning it and staining it once a year. Once you’ve done that, you can usually leave your redwood fence alone: it doesn’t require much maintenance because it is naturally sturdy, insect-resistant, mold-resistant, and rot-resistant.

After a big storm we also recommend clearing debris from the fence and checking it for signs of physical trauma. Usually there won’t be any at all. Redwood is tough!

Are redwood fences safe for pets and kids?

Yes! Redwood is completely non-toxic. If you want to be doubly sure, select a non-toxic oil-based stain from a company like Green Building Supply or Eco-Building Products.

In reality, if your pets aren’t prone to chewing on your fence and your kid is old enough to avoid licking it, the stain you use won’t matter much. The fence should be safe either way. Nevertheless, if non-toxic safety is important to you, you have options.
